Police in Kiambu County are investigating an incident in which a man is suspected of killing his ex-wife before committing suicide.

In a statement on Monday, December 23, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) disclosed that the woman was heading home in the company of another woman when the suspect attacked them.

"Residents of Kamandura village of Kamirithu in Limuru, Kiambu County are mourning the brutal killing of a 34-year-old mother of three, who was waylaid by her recently separated husband while heading back to her children from a Chama yesterday. The suspect identified as Paul Waweru Waithera is reported to have committed suicide after the incident," DCI remarked.

It added, "Probing the murder, police established that the victim was heading home from the Chama meeting held at Kamirithu Shopping Centre in the company of another woman, when the husband accosted them while armed with a crude weapon."

The directorate explained that the suspect grabbed his ex-wife before descending on her, but the other woman managed to flee and report the incident to a village elder.

DCI noted that the incident was reported by the village elder after he stumbled on the badly mutilated body of the victim sprawled at a maize farm.

"As he grabbed the mother of his children, the other woman managed to escape and informed the village elder. Unfortunately, by the time a search party found the woman, she was dead and cold. The suspect's body would later be found dangling from the roof of his house, dead," DCI stated.

The DCI crime scene investigators processed both incidents and the bodies of the deceased were taken to Tigoni Level IV Hospital mortuary for preservation.
