Matiang'i served as a key figure in Uhuru's administration, holding multiple cabinet positions during Kenyatta's tenure from 2013 to 2022.

Initially appointed as Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communications, and Technology in 2013, Matiang'i was later assigned to the Education Ministry in 2015, where he implemented significant reforms.

In 2017, following the death of Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Ole Nkaissery, Kenyatta appointed Matiang'i as the acting Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government.

He officially took over the position in 2018 and was also appointed chairperson of the National Development Implementation and Communication Cabinet Committee in 2019, overseeing government projects and programs.

Matiang'i was often regarded as one of Uhuru's most trusted and influential ministers, earning the nickname "super CS" due to his expanded responsibilities and authority within the government.
