The Ministry of Education has announced new guidelines ahead of school reopening.

The Ministry of Education has announced that its field officers will monitor adherence to the academic calendar when schools reopen on January 6.

In a statement issued on Saturday, January 4, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba reaffirmed that Term 1 will span 13 weeks, including a five-day mid-term break.

"Term One of 2025 will have 13 weeks, with 5 days for mid-term break. All schools are expected to re-open for the new term on Monday, 6th January 2025. The Ministry’s field officers, under the guidance of the Regional Directors of Education and the County Directors of Education, will monitor adherence to the academic calendar," Ogamba remarked.

At the same time, the CS disclosed that the completion of the construction of 16,000 classrooms for a seamless transition of learners to Grade 9 was at 93% so far.

He noted that in instances where the completion has not been finalized, education officials will effect temporary measures to ensure all learners are accommodated.

Additionally, Ogamba declared that the government will disburse Ksh48 billion in capitation to public schools.

"The Ministry will disburse Kshs. 48,379,800,028.32, being 50% of the capitation due to schools this academic year. We are working with the National Treasury for the release of Exchequer to facilitate timely disbursement. In Term Two, schools will receive 30% of the capitation, while the balance of 20% will be disbursed in Term Three," Ogamba explained.

He further maintained that all schools are required to adhere to the safety standards manual and that the government will continuously assess schools for compliance.

Ogamba noted that the 348 schools whose boarding sections were identified for closure will be reopened only upon demonstrating compliance with applicable safety protocols.

Similarly, the CS stated that all school vehicles will undergo routine inspection by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and that no school bus or vehicle ferrying learners will be allowed on the road before 6:00 a.m. and after 6:00 p.m.

Meanwhile, Ogamba indicated that the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) results will be accessible on school portals starting Monday, January 6.
