President William Ruto on Monday, March 10, announced that the government would increase the allowance paid to the youth employed under the Climate WorX programme. 

Speaking during the launch of Nairobi Rivers Engineering Works, Ruto noted that the youth had been hardworking following their involvement in the cleaning of the Nairobi River. 

He also acknowledged that the youth had requested for the Ksh500 per day allowance to be increased.

Additionally, the Head of State announced that the government would employ 18,000 more youth to the programme.

"I have heard that the youth in Climate WorX wanted to be added some pay. I have heard you. I will organise that plan.

"CS AliceWahome and PS Charles Hinga, these youth are very hardworking, and I agree we need to plan better for them. In addition to increasing the allowance, we will add 18,000 youth to this programme," he stated.

Currently, those in the cleaning programme receive Ksh500 per day, which is paid to them via mobile money after two weeks.

Meanwhile, he revealed that the ongoing rehabilitation works will include the construction of a new sewer line, given that the old line was constructed near the river.

"Today, we are starting a huge project under the Nairobi River Regeneration Program. We will construct a 60-kilometer sewer line so that we do away with wastewater and sewage to make the Nairobi River clean," Ruto added.
