 Kenya Met said Nairobi will experience moderate to heavy rainfall, with some areas exceeding 50mm of rain. 

The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued a 24-hour rainfall forecast for Nairobi and surrounding counties, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall in some areas.  

In an update on Monday, March 10, KMD said Nairobi will experience moderate to heavy rainfall, with some areas exceeding 50mm of rain. 

Embakasi East is expected to be the most affected, with a red zone indicating very heavy rainfall. 

Other areas, including Westlands, Dagoretti, Kibra, and Lang’ata, will receive moderate to heavy rainfall, while northern parts like Roysambu and Kasarani may experience lighter showers.

In Kiambu County, Lari, Limuru, Kabete and Kikuyu will likely experience heavy rainfall exceeding 30mm, with some pockets receiving even more.  

Githunguri, Kiambaa and Juja will receive moderate to heavy rain, while Thika and Ruiru will see scattered showers. 

The county is expected to have significant rainfall variations, with some localized heavy downpours.

Machakos County will experience heavy rainfall, particularly in Machakos Town, Mavoko and Kathiani, where precipitation is expected to exceed 50mm. 

Matungulu, Kangundo and Mwala will see moderate to heavy showers, while Yatta and Masinga will receive lighter rainfall. 

The southern region of the county is expected to experience the most intense rainfall in the Nairobi Metropolis. 

In Kajiado County, Kajiado East and Kajiado Central are forecasted to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall, with some areas exceeding 50mm.   

Kajiado West and Kajiado South will experience moderate to heavy showers, while Kajiado North will have scattered showers. 

The forecast shows isolated intense storms, especially in the central region of the county.

The forecast is valid from 9 AM on Monday, March 10 to 9 AM on Tuesday, March 11.

On Saturday, March 8, KMD issued a heavy rainfall alert, warning residents in multiple counties to brace for potential floods and poor visibility over the coming days.   

In an advisory, KMD forecasted heavy rainfall exceeding 20mm in 24 hours in parts of the Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, and Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley.  

"Heavy rainfall of more than 20mm in 24 hours is expected in parts of the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley including Nairobi area and southeastern lowlands on 9th March 2025. 

"The heavy rainfall is likely to intensify to more than 30mm in 24 hours and spread to part of northwestern Kenya on 10th March, 2025. It is projected to reduce in intensity from 11th March 2025," the advisory read.

Counties that were projected to experience heavy rainfall include Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Homabay, Siaya, Migori, Busia, Kisumu, Kisii, Nyamira, Nandi, Kakamega and Vihiga. 

Others are Bungoma, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans-Nzoia, Uasin-Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, West-Pokot, Turkana, Marsabit, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Nairobi, Machakos and Kajiado.
