ODM leader Raila Odinga has weighed in on Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho’s 2022 presidential bid, noting that it is his democratic right to contest for the seat.
Speaking in Voi on Tuesday, Odinga noted that Joho will be subjected to party procedures just like all other leaders who express interest in flying the ODM presidential flag come the 2022 general election.
“Just like any other position, Joho can vie for the presidency on an ODM ticket. A democratic system shall be used to vote for a flag bearer. My other deputy and Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya also wants to vie on ODM,” Odinga said.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that Governor Joho has already applied to be ODM’s presidential candidate in the 2022 General election.

According to Joho, he is best suited to be the ODM candidate as he has stood firmly with the party since its inception. He further argues that he has been a key voice in the party and has spearheaded several important party activities like campaigning for the BBI Bill in the Coastal region among others.
Meanwhile, a section of leaders from the Coastal region has been pushing for the formation of a Coastal party aimed at bringing the region together ahead of 2022.
The group is led by Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi who argues that having one party will give the region more clout in the upcoming general election.
Odinga, however, discourages this noting that it could be a threat to national unity.
