The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued a weather advisory indicating the onset of significant rainfall across multiple regions of the country starting Sunday, March 16.
In an update on Sunday, the department announced incoming rains across key regions including Western Kenya, Rift Valley, Central Highlands including Nairobi.
According to KMD, rains are also expected in the Lake Victoria Basin, parts of the South-Eastern Lowlands, and areas along the Coast, North-Eastern and North-Western Kenya.
KMD also noted that isolated storms and heavy rainfall events are expected in some areas, with the rainfall likely signaling the start of the long rainy season.
"Isolated storms and heavy rainfall events are likely in some areas. This rainfall is likely to mark the onset of the rainy season in several parts of the country, although subsequent updates will be issued," KMD wrote on X.

According to rainfall maps released by the department, rainfall ranging between 30 to over 80 mm is projected over South-Western Kenya from March 16 to 17.
On the other hand, the map showed central regions, including Nairobi, are expected to receive moderate rainfall ranging from 10 to 35 mm.
From March 17 to 18, rainfall will spread northward, although intensity will slightly reduce, with most areas expected to receive between 5 to 25 mm.
During this period, Western and Central Kenya will receive moderate rainfall.
Between March 18 and 19, rainfall is expected to intensify again in Central Kenya, Rift Valley and parts of the Lake Victoria Basin, reaching up to 35 mm.
KMD's 7-day cumulative rainfall forecast, from March 16 to 23, indicates that cumulative rainfall is expected to exceed 100 mm in parts of Western, Rift Valley and South-Eastern Kenya.
The Lake Victoria Basin and Central Highlands will likely see substantial rainfall, while the Coastal and North-Eastern regions will also experience scattered showers.
