Sonko issued the warning over concerns over rising criminal activities within the Boda Boda sector.

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has been unanimously elected as the Patron of the Boda Boda and Tuk Tuk Transport Cooperative Union of Kenya.

In a statement on Monday, March 17, Sonko expressed gratitude to the union’s leadership for entrusting him with the role and reaffirmed his commitment to advocating for the rights of boda boda and tuk tuk operators.

"This union brings together all the other Sacco and associations countrywide under one umbrella, and it boasts a membership exceeding 2.5 million individuals.

"I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the leadership of the union for the confidence they have placed in me and my ability to lead, and I commit to advocating for their rights," he stated.

Sonko also addressed concerns over rising criminal activities within the sector, issuing a strong warning to cartels and rogue operators who have infiltrated the industry.

“To the cartels and criminals who have infiltrated the boda boda industry and engaged in criminal activities, be aware that we shall come for you. We won’t allow a few criminals to tarnish the name of this good industry,” he warned.

Sonko further pledged to implement measures aimed at restoring order and professionalism within the sector.

“I shall be dedicated to restoring order and sanity within this sector. Under my leadership, I assure the people of Kenya a strong, disciplined, and professional approach to service delivery in this important transport industry," he added.

The Boda Boda and Tuk Tuk Transport Cooperative Union was set to address challenges faced by its members, including regulatory issues, safety concerns, and economic empowerment.

Additionally, the union collaborates with organizations like the Tuk Tuk Operators Network, which strives to network three-wheeler transport industry players in the informal sector to a common socio-economic platform.
