The incident happened on Monday, April 7, at the Makunga Forest block of Saboti Forest Station in Trans Nzoia County.

The Kenya Forest Service (KFS) has clarified social media reports alleging that KFS rangers shot and killed a Form 3 student on a private farm in Trans Nzoia County. 

In a statement on Tuesday, April 8, KFS said the incident happened at the Makunga Forest block of Saboti Forest Station in Trans Nzoia County.

KFS said that its officers had gone to flush out invaders of the forest land, but were confronted by goons armed with crude weapons.

During the melee, KFS said one person was shot and killed by a suspected stray bullet.

“The Service seeks to make clarification as follows: The unfortunate incident occurred at Makunga Forest block of Saboti Forest Station within Trans Nzoia County on 7th April, 2025 at around 0800hrs whereby Forest Rangers were in the course of law enforcement to flush out invaders who had intruded on forest land to cultivate and erect structures.

“The Rangers were confronted by goons armed with crude weapons and during the melee, one person was fatally injured by a suspected stray bullet,” read part of the KFS statement.

The service pointed out that the land in question is not a private farm but is a gazetted forest under the management of KFS.

Further, KFS said the matter is currently under investigation and that it is cooperating with the police to ensure the victim gets justice.

“The matter is under investigation, and the Service is cooperating with the National Police Service and is at the forefront to ensure justice is served to the victim.

“Kenya Forest Service remains steadfast and committed to managing, conserving, and protecting public forests while upholding human rights,” KFS added.
