“These questions require clarity; I've been asked before but I can only promise to ask and respond at the right time."

Trade Cabinet Secretary Lee Kinyanjui has responded to speculation surrounding former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s alleged influence in his appointment.

Speaking in an interview on Monday, April 14, Kinyanjui failed to deny or confirm the claims, only stating that his appointment should not be politicized.

“These questions require clarity; I've been asked before but I can only promise to ask and respond at the right time. I want to mention that this is not my first public appointment; I have served in Parliament, parastatals and I have been a governor so I'm not entirely new to public service,” he said.

While highlighting his long-standing experience in public service, Kinyanjui reiterated his commitment to contributing to national progress.

“The opportunity to serve your country should not be politicized. I was asked whether I am ready to come and fill a position to move the country forward, and I said anything that helps my country to move forward, even if it is by 1 inch or 1 km, I will be part,” he added.

The former Nakuru governor was appointed by President William Ruto to serve as the Cabinet Secretary for Investment, Trade, and Industry on December 28, 2024.

In his acceptance statement, Kinyanjui expressed gratitude to the president for the trust placed in him and pledged to uphold the constitution in his new role.

“For God and country, I accept the honour of nomination to serve our nation as the Cabinet Secretary for Investment, Trade, and Industry. I take this opportunity to thank the President William Ruto, for demonstrating confidence in my ability to steer this critical docket.

"As always, integrity, respect for the Constitution, and honesty shall guide my way," he said at the time.

Following his nomination, Kinyanjui underwent vetting by the National Assembly's Committee on Appointments on January 14, 2025.

The vetting process assessed his suitability for the Cabinet position, as part of the parliamentary approval required for such appointments.

Upon successful vetting and parliamentary approval, Kinyanjui was officially sworn in as Cabinet Secretary on January 17, 2025, at State House Nairobi, alongside fellow appointees Mutahi Kagwe and William Kabogo.

During the swearing-in ceremony, Ruto highlighted the appointees' experience in politics and governance, expressing confidence in their ability to lead their respective ministries.

“With their strong mix of leadership skills and extensive experience in political, legislative, and Executive capacities, the three Cabinet Secretaries are well-equipped to drive the delivery of services, while steering inclusive development and economic growth that leaves no one behind,” he said.
