A team of government pathologists led by Chief Government Pathologist Johansen Oduor has confirmed that Kariobangi North MCA Joel Munuve died as a result of a blood clot that severely obstructed blood flow to his lungs, leading to insufficient oxygen supply.
The postmortem examination, conducted on Friday, April 25, at the Lee Funeral Home, revealed that Munuve succumbed to pulmonary thromboembolism, a condition in which a blood clot formed in the deep veins of his left leg traveled to his lungs and fatally blocked a major blood vessel.
According to Oduor, the clot originated from the popliteal vein, located behind the knee, where multiple other clots were also discovered.
He confirmed that some of the clots appeared to have been present for a prolonged period, indicating a chronic underlying issue.

The autopsy further noted a significant clot covered with a whitish layer in the pulmonary trunk, suggesting it had developed over time.
The clot extended into the lungs, causing a pulmonary infarction, the death of lung tissue due to lack of blood, flow, which ultimately led to Munuve's death.
In addition to these findings, pathologists observed a scar in the right lung, pointing to a chronic lung condition, and a swelling in the neck.
“As a result of my examination, I formed the opinion that the cause of death was Pulmonary Thromboembolism due to Left Popliteal Vein Deep Vein Thrombosis. A blood clot travelled to the lungs and blocked a blood vessel, leading to death,” Oduor stated.
Munuve passed away on Tuesday, April 22, while receiving treatment at a hospital in Kiambu.
