"The safety and well-being of fans, players, and officials remains a top priority for the Federation."

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has launched an investigation into the chaotic scenes that unfolded at Gusii Stadium during the FKF Premier League clash between Shabana FC and Gor Mahia.

In a statement on Sunday, May 4, FKF confirmed that dozens of fans were injured after violence erupted in the stands, forcing the match to be abandoned midway.

According to the federation, 72 individuals were treated at local hospitals following the incident.

“We have received confirmed reports from Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital, RAM Hospital, Hema Hospital, Christamarianne Hospital, and the police, indicating that a total of 72 individuals were treated for injuries. Thankfully, no fatalities have been reported as of this evening,” the statement read.

The federation condemned the violence and emphasized its commitment to ensuring safety at football venues across the country.

“FKF strongly condemns all forms of violence in our stadiums. Football must remain a sport that brings people together, not one that puts lives at risk. The safety and well-being of fans, players, and officials remain a top priority for the Federation,” the statement added.

FKF affirmed that it is working with law enforcement agencies to determine the cause of the chaos and pledged to take stern action once the facts are clear.

“We are working closely with the relevant authorities to establish the circumstances that led to the unrest. Decisive disciplinary measures will be taken upon the conclusion of ongoing investigations.

"We urge members of the public and the media to refrain from circulating unverified reports, particularly claims of fatalities,” the statement further read.

During the match, clashes broke out in the stands, leading to stone-throwing incidents and a stampede that resulted in injuries.

However, despite the unrest, the game proceeded under heightened security measures with Gor Mahia securing a 1-0 victory.
