The Met Department noted that May marks the end of the long rains season.

The Kenya Meteorological Department has announced that rainfall is expected to reduce in the coming days.

In a statement on Wednesday, May 14, the Met Department noted that May marks the end of the long rains season.

“May marks the end of the “Long Rains” season across much of the country, except for the Coastal region and western Kenya, where rainfall typically extends into June.

“The outlook for May 2025 had indicated that several parts of the country were likely to experience near-average to above-average rainfall, although a few areas, particularly over the north coast and parts of Garissa, were expected to receive below-average rainfall. May also marks the peak of the March to May rainfall season over the coastal region,” read part of the statement.

The weatherman projected that the rainfall currently being experienced is expected to gradually reduce in intensity and coverage from Thursday, May 15; however, a few areas are likely to experience continued rainfall.

“A few areas over the Lake Victoria Basin, Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley, the Rift Valley, isolated areas over the Southeastern lowlands especially those neighboring Nairobi County, and the Coastal region are likely to continue receiving rainfall with some breaks for the remaining part of May,” the Met Department stated.

The weather forecast also indicated that the northeast, and most of the Southeastern lowlands are likely to remain generally dry however a few areas over Northwest may receive occasional rainfall.

In June, the Met Department observed that the Lake Victoria Basin, the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Rift Valley, and the Coastal region are likely to continue receiving rainfall.

The weatherman also warned of cold conditions likely to be experienced over the Highlands East of the Rift Valley including Nairobi, some parts of the Southeastern lowlands and the high ground areas of Marsabit county.
