Kanja asserted that preliminary investigations were pointing to a staged abduction.

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has revealed that a suspect has been arrested following the abduction of Juja MP George Koimburi.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, May 28, Kanja asserted that preliminary investigations were pointing to a staged abduction.

He added that the suspect arrested was involved in staging the abduction and had made a confession to the police.

According to the police, the MP spent the night at the hotel and was transported to the scene of the crime on Monday morning.

"One suspect, Karanja Gatana, has been arrested. Gatana admitted to dropping the MP at a hotel where he had refreshments and spent the night with two abductors on May 25," Kanja announced.

"He admitted that on May 26, while using another vehicle, he picked up the MP from the hotel and took him to the scene where they claimed that he had been dumped. Before the MP exited the motor vehicle, he helped him tear his clothes to fake evidence of torture by the alleged abductors."

Additionally, Kanja added that police had seized two vehicles that were used in the incident.

The police boss maintained that investigations were still ongoing, with detectives expected to record a statement from the MP who is in hospital.

Kanja asserted that action would be taken against the MP if it is established that he took part in the staged abduction.

"If an offence is disclosed in the course of our investigations, then naturally, the law will take its own course," he added.

Koimburi is currently admitted at a hospital in Nairobi and was reported to have lost his voice during the incident.

"Some chemical was administered through inhalation, and the doctors have told us that preliminary investigations confirm that the chemical has interfered with his vocal cords," former DP Rigathi Gachagua stated.

Further to the press briefing issued yesterday, the National Police Service (NPS) would like to inform the public of the progress made in the ongoing investigation into the alleged abduction of Hon. George Koimburi, Member of Parliament for Juja Constituency, as follows:

Three additional individuals Peter Kiratu (Juja CDF Chairman), Cyrus Kieru Muhia and Karanja Gatana were arrested and provided statements, which have offered crucial leads and further insights into the alleged abduction.

Peter Kiratu, the Juja CDF Chairman, stated that on 25 May 2025, he attended a church service at Full Gospel Church, Mugutha, with the MP. As they were leaving, a silver Subaru Forester Reg. KBP 096W approached the main entrance, and two heavily built men bundled the MP into the vehicle. He reported the incident at Mugutha Police Station.

Additionally, on 26 May 2025, he received a call from the MP's daughter, Wanjiru, informing him that the MP had been found in a coffee farm in Juja. They then took the MP to Plainsview Hospital, Ruiru, for first aid before he was referred to Karen Hospital for further treatment.

Cyrus Kieru Muhia an ally of Hon. Koimburi who runs a supermarket at Kahawa West Area stated that on 24 May 2025, he received a call from Peter Kiratu CDF Chairman requesting the use of his Subaru Forester Reg. No. KDG 803B to transport additional security personnel for the MP during an event at Full Gospel Church, Mugutha, and he agreed.

On 25 May 2025, Kiratu instructed him to go to his homestead in Mugutha, where he met a man named Gatana (driving Kiratu’s vehicle, Reg. No. KBР 096W) Honda CRV along with three unknown men. They proceeded to the church to familiarise themselves with the route before returning.

Later, Kiratu called and instructed him to drive his Subaru Forester with two men towards the church. Upon arrival, the two men exited quickly, and he heard screams as the MP was forced into the vehicle. They drove towards Jacaranda Coffee Research via Kambogo Road, where the MP instructed them to stop near a waiting Honda CRV (Reg. No. KBP 096W), belonging to Kiratu. Cyrus was left with the two men, who warned him not to disclose any information to the police.

The police have managed to recover two vehicles, a Honda CRV (Reg. No. KBP 096W) belonging to Peter Kiratu and a Subaru Forester, silver in colour (Reg. No. KDG 803B) belonging to Cyrus Kieru Muhia. Additionally, one suspect, Karanja Gatana, has been arrested. Gatana admitted to dropping the MP at a hotel where he had refreshments and spent the night with the two abductors on 25 May 2025, following the alleged abduction.

He added that, on 26 May 2025, while using Kiratu's vehicle, he picked up the MP from the hotel and took him to the scene where they claimed he had been dumped. Before the MP exited the vehicle, he helped him tear his clothes to fake evidence of torture by the alleged abductors.

NPS further appeals for the public's continued support and encourages anyone with information that may assist the investigation to report it to the nearest police station.
