Mandera Governor Mohamed Adan Khalif has tasked his deputy, Ali Maalim Mohamud, with being in charge of the county in his absence.
Adan said he would be out of the country for 20 days between May 28 and June 17.
He addressed his communique to the Speaker of the County Assembly, County Public Service Board, county secretary, county attorney, all County Executive Committee members, county chief of staff and all CCOs.
The county boss did not immediately disclose why he was leaving the county.
"I will be temporarily away from the County/Republic of Kenya from 28th May, 2025 to 17th June, 2025 for performance of Hajj rituals; now therefore, I do hereby designate H.E. Ali Maalim Mohamud, EBS, the deputy governor of Mandera County, to act as the County Governor during my absence, with effect from 28th May, 2025 until my return and resumption of duties," read his notice.

Adan attributed his move to Article 179(5) of the constitution, which allows for a deputy governor to be in charge of the county administration in the absence of the governor.
Meanwhile, Mohamud will not exercise all the powers reserved for the governor.
He won't appoint or dismiss a county executive committee member or other public officers.
The deputy governor confirmed taking over the county on an interim basis.
"I do hereby acknowledge receipt of this handing over and commit to act in accordance with the Constitution, relevant laws, and delegated responsibilities during His Excellency the Governor's absence," he said.
