Security officials caught the terrorists red-handed while attempting to set up an IED.

Two suspected Al-Shabaab militants were killed in a security operation along the Alungu-Elwak road in Mandera County

In a statement on Tuesday, June 10, the Counter Terrorism Policing said the elite Special Operations Group carried out a pre-dawn raid after receiving credible intelligence that the militants were in the final stages of placing explosives on the busy road.

“Acting on credible intelligence, the elite Special Operations Group launched a pre-dawn operation on Al-Shabaab militants who were planning to terrorise Kenyans using Alungu-Elwak road, Mandera County,” the statement read.

According to CTP, security officials caught the terrorists red-handed while attempting to set up an improvised explosive device (IED), prompting a fierce gunfight.

“The terrorists were caught in the act of setting up the IED. A fierce firefight ensued, during which two militants were neutralised and others sustained serious injuries before fleeing into nearby thickets with our gallant officers in hot pursuit,” the statement added.

During the operation, officers recovered two AK-47 rifles, a Rocket-Propelled Grenade (RPG) warhead, and a fully assembled IED.

“This successful operation highlights the continued commitment and vigilance of Kenya's security forces in the fight against terrorism,” Counter Terrorism Policing stated.

This comes a week after four Al-Shabaab terrorists were killed following a. operation by the elite Special Operations Group (SOG) in the Najo and Guracho areas of Garissa County.

In a statement on Monday, June 2, Counter Terrorism Policing Kenya said the coordinated counter-terrorism effort led to the recovery of a cache of weapons, including AK-47 rifles, a PKM machine gun, and several rounds of ammunition.

Additionally, CTP attributed the success of the operation to a meticulously planned intelligence-led operation.

“The militants were first spotted by a surveillance drone, after which SOG units tracked and engaged them. A fierce exchange of fire ensued, resulting in four terrorists being eliminated.

"Recovered at the scene were AK-47 rifles, a PKM machine gun, multiple rounds of ammunition, and communication radios," the statement read.
