Muturi had stepped down from the position in October 2022 to take up the role of Attorney General in the Kenya Kwanza government.

Former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi has been reinstated as the leader of the Democratic Party of Kenya (DP).

Muturi was reinstated to the position following a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on Tuesday, June 10.

In a statement after being reinstated, Muturi thanked members of the DP NEC for having confidence in him.

However, he said the resolution is subject to ratification by the National Delegates Convention (NDC), which is slated later this year.

“A new chapter begins for the Democratic Party. I sincerely thank the members of the National Executive Committee (NEC) for their confidence in me and their unanimous resolution to reinstate me as the Party Leader with immediate effect, subject to ratification by the National Delegates Convention (NDC) later this year.

“This decision is not just a personal honour, it is a call to action as we work together to rebuild, re-energize, and reposition our party for the future,” he stated.

Muturi had stepped down from the position in October 2022 to take up the role of Attorney General in the Kenya Kwanza government.

He, however, fell out with President Ruto and was dismissed from the Cabinet in March, replaced by Geoffrey Ruku in the Ministry of Public Service.

Before being sacked, Muturi had publicly criticized the Ruto-led government over abductions and extra-judicial killings.

On March 7, the Democratic Party announced its exit from the Kenya Kwanza coalition, citing prevailing political developments as the reason for its departure.

The party gave a 30-day notice to exit the coalition as stipulated in the Kenya Kwanza coalition agreement.

"Kindly take notice that our stay in Kenya Kwanza Coalition is no longer tenable due to the prevailing political developments," the letter read in part.

"Democratic Party of Kenya, vide this letter, hereby gives a thirty (30) day notice to exit the Coalition as stipulated in the Termination Clause (8) in the Coalition Agreement.”
