Kenya Met indicated that the winds could cause damage to trees and buildings.


The Kenya Meteorological Department has warned of expected strong winds and large waves across 15 counties.

In the advisory issued on Friday, June 13, the listed counties were Lamu, Kilifi, Mombasa, Kwale, Tana River, Taita Taveta, Marsabit, and Turkana.

Also listed were Samburu, Isiolo, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Kitui, and Makueni counties.

Kenya Met indicated that the weather patterns would be witnessed for six days beginning Friday.

"Strong southerly winds of more than 25 knots (12.9 m/s) being experienced over the North-eastern, North-western, South-eastern lowlands and Coastal regions of Kenya on Friday, 13 June 2025 are expected to strengthen to more than 30 knots (15.4 m/s) from Saturday, 14 June 2025 to Tuesday, 17 June 2025.

"Wind speeds are likely to reduce to 25 knots (12.9 m/s) on Wednesday, 18 June 2025," read the notice in part.

Meanwhile, the waves in the Indian Ocean are expected to be high between Saturday and Tuesday.

"Wave heights are likely to be more than 2.5 meters over the Kenya coastal waters on Friday, 13 June 2025. The wave heights are expected to increase to 2.8 meters from Saturday, 14 to Tuesday, 17 June 2025. They are expected to reduce to below 2.4 meters on Wednesday, 18 June 2025."

Consequently, residents of the affected counties were encouraged to be on the lookout for safety purposes.

Kenya Met indicated that the winds could cause damage to trees and buildings.

"People in all the mentioned areas are advised to be on the lookout for potential gales (very strong winds) and large waves over the Indian Ocean," Kenya Met added.

"Strong winds may uproot trees, blow off roofs, and cause structural damage. Large waves may lower visibility and affect marine activities."
