Metro Trans has temporarily suspended matatu services due to the protests within Nairobi and neighbouring counties.

In a statement dated Wednesday, June 25, the matatu company stated that the decision was taken to guarantee the safety of the buses and that of their clients.

According to the company, the services will resume on Thursday, June 26.

"We wish to inform you that our operations will be temporarily suspended on Wednesday due to the planned demonstrations. Normal services will resume on Thursday, 26th June 2025. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause."

"The safety of our clients, partners, and staff remains our highest priority. May God bless you, and may God bless Kenya," read the statement in part.

Matatu services within the CBD were paralyzed on Wednesday as protestors took to the streets to remember those who lost their lives during the 2024 Gen Z protests.

In anticipation of the protests, police blocked major roads within the CBD, forcing matatus to drop off passengers in stages outside the CBD.

While the protests were largely peaceful in the morning hours, police clashed with protesters minutes before midday, with several teargas canisters lobbed at those demonstrating.

Some of the protesters and police were injured in the process, with some taken to Kenyatta National Hospital for medical attention.

Meanwhile, various organisations such as the Red Cross have set up camps in the CBD to help those injured.

"Our emergency responders are providing first aid, conducting casualty evacuations, and monitoring the situation to ensure those in need receive timely assistance.

"Toll-free emergency line: 1199," read the statement in part.
