Opposition figure Irungu Nyakera has alleged a scheme to manipulate the 2027 General Election by scrapping the voter register and using national ID cards instead.
In a statement on Tuesday, July 29, Nyakera claimed that the shift towards using ID cards for voting is a move by President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga to steal the 2027 election.
"The sudden push to use ID cards instead of the voter register is a well coordinated narrative by President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga to steal the 2027 election," he said.
Nyakera went ahead to point out a series of recent developments, which he said reflect a plan to manipulate the polls.
"Consider the pattern. Just last week, it was announced that 400,000 people in Turkana will be issued with ID cards," he added.

Nyakera also cited a move by ODM Chairman John Mbadi urging a door-to-door campaign in Luo Nyanza to help youth acquire ID cards, as well as a policy reversal by Ruto.
"A week earlier, John Mbadi cold for a door to door campaign in Luo Nyanza to register youth for ID cards.
"Earlier this year, Ruto lifted the vetting ban on ID registration in Northern Kenya, just months after projections indicated that the region would register 3.5 million new voters,” he noted.
Nyakera further accused Raila of pushing for a proposal to discard the official voter register entirely, and alleged the existence of a secret team working to block voter registration in Mt. Kenya.
"Now, Raila is calling on the IEBC to abandon the official voter register and instead rely on ID cards alone for voting.
"Meanwhile, I have received credible intelligence on a clandestine 135-member team that has been deployed to suppress GEMA youth from obtaining IDs and registering to vote,” he said.
In a rallying call to the public, Nyakera urged vigilance and asked those working in registration departments not to be used the alleged plan.
"Fellow Kenyans, let us not sleep through this calculated plan to deny us our democratic right to vote out this government. And to those working in registration and ID departments: do not allow yourselves to be used. Kenyans are watching,” he concluded.
