Opposition leaders from the People's Liberation Party (PLP) have voiced serious concerns over what they describe as contaminated sugar currently held at the Port of Mombasa.
Speaking during a press briefing at PLP headquarters on Thursday, July 31, Eugene Wamalwa, Martha Karua, and Kalonzo Musyoka condemned the consignment as a health hazard.
The leaders revealed that 25,000 metric tonnes of imported sugar, allegedly earmarked for repackaging in factories in Western Kenya, is unfit for human consumption.
"We demand that the 25,000Mts of imported sugar at the Port of Mombasa, destined for repackaging in factories currently closed for three months, be condemned. It is unfit for human consumption,” they stated.
Martha spoke strongly against the sale of the consignment, condemning the government for allowing the importation in the first place.

"The sugar has been cleared quickly. This shows the heartlessness of this regime. They have made money their god," she said.
The press conference also served as a platform for the opposition to address what they termed as escalating police brutality and harassment targeted at their members.
The leaders stood in solidarity with coalition members who had reportedly been victims of police intimidation in Subukia and Murang’a.
“We strongly condemned the growing trend of state-sponsored intimidation, violence, and blatant abuse of power aimed at silencing opposition leaders and disrupting our peaceful rallies,” the statement reads.
The coalition has called on the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to take immediate action regarding a formal complaint lodged earlier in the week against officers accused of misconduct.
“No amount of threats or harassment will break our resolve. We will defend our constitutional right to assemble, speak, and lead without fear,” the leaders asserted.
