9 Governors Under Scrutiny Over Corruption - EACC Chair David Oginde

Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) Chairperson David Oginde has revealed that 9 governors are under investigation for allegations of corruption.

Speaking on Tuesday, August 12, Oginde said the investigations on the 9 county bosses are at different stages.

“We are pursuing quite a number of governors; at the moment, 9 governors are under scrutiny at different levels of their cases, which is unfortunate considering we have only 47 counties, and 9 out of 47 is a very high percentage. Not just governors, it goes all the way down to other staff of the counties,” Oginde stated.

The EACC Chair noted that the counties considered marginalized are the worst affected by corruption.

He said elected leaders in these regions siphon public funds and invest them in Nairobi instead of working to uplift their counties.

"I have been surprised that some of the worst-hit counties are those that are considered marginalized.

“They are given privileges to try and bring the county up, but the leaders in those counties are syphoning that money and bringing it back to Nairobi to buy apartments and start businesses,” Oginde stated.

The EACC Chair also said governors use irregular procurement systems and junior staff to syphon money from counties.

Further, Oginde said some county bosses launch false claims to loot money from the counties.

“We are investigating one county where the governor had got over Ksh600 million out of claims and you find these money goes to junior officers who are supposed to attend seminars but when you go to investigate, you get the claimed hotels don’t exits and if they exits they don’t know if the county staff came to the hotels,” he added.
