Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) has notified its pre-paid and post-paid customers of an oncoming payment disruption.
On Friday, September 19, Safaricom announced a scheduled system upgrade that would temporarily interrupt its flagship mobile money product for three hours on Monday, September 22, 2025.
The telecommunication giant announced that the maintenance would last for two hours between 12:30 am and 3:30 am.
In anticipation of far-reaching interruptions, the country's power utility firm alerted its customers to plan accordingly.
Most pre-paid customers use the 888880 paybill number on M-Pesa to purchase their electricity units.
KPLC announced that the paybill would not be in use during the M-Pesa maintenance period.
Customers were counselled to use their respective banks for tokens' purchases and other bills' payments.
"During this period, Kenya Power Paybill numbers, including 888880 for token purchase and 888888 for postpaid bill payments, will not be available. Customers can continue to buy tokens and pay bills through alternative channels such as Airtel Money, DTB Bank, NCBA Bank, Family Bank, Co-operative Bank, KCB, I&M Bank, National Bank of Kenya, and Equity Bank via their USSD codes or smartphone apps," read KPLC's statement on Saturday, September 20.
Meanwhile, customers dependent on M-Pesa were urged to purchase in early enough before the maintenance starts.
"We also encourage you to purchase your electricity tokens in advance before the scheduled maintenance to avoid any inconvenience. We appreciate your patience and understanding," KPLC announced.
Besides paybill, other M-Pesa services slated for disruption include airtime purchase.
The company explained that the maintenance exercise was scheduled past midnight to minimize inconvenience to M-Pesa customers.
“We apologize for any inconvenience that may be caused and thank you for your continued support,” Safaricom added.
