The Council of Governors (CoG) has convened an extraordinary meeting following Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga’s remarks on the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
In a statement on Tuesday, October 21, CoG Chairperson Ahmed Abdullahi said the governors will meet on Wednesday to discuss Kahiga’s utterances.
“In light of the above, I have convened an urgent Extra-Ordinary Council Meeting to be held tomorrow morning to deliberate on these unfortunate utterances, and further statements will follow,” read the statement in part.
Abdullahi also expressed disappointment with the Nyeri Governor’s remarks on Raila, terming them as reckless and unacceptable.
He dissociated CoG from Governor Kahiga’s sentiments, saying they are personal views and do not reflect the views of the council.

“As the Council of Governors, we wish to disassociate in toto with the sentiments of Governor Kahiga and note that those are personal remarks that do not reflect or represent the views of the Council of Governors, especially at this time of deep mourning.
“We note that the comments are indeed reckless, insensitive, sad, and unfortunate. It is inhumane and unacceptable to celebrate his death on account of perceived political calculations. H.E. Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga was and will forever remain a Statesman whose contributions are embedded in the annals of our Country’s History,” Abdullahi added.
Speaking on Tuesday in the Kikuyu dialect during a funeral in Nyeri County, Governor Kahiga appeared to celebrate the death of Raila.
Governor Kahiga claimed that the death of the former Prime Minister was a blessing in disguise for the Mt Kenya region.
The Nyeri County boss claimed that Raila’s agreement with the current government had sidelined the Mt. Kenya region from accessing government resources.
"The plan that had been hatched, if you look keenly, for you who do not travel, because I was in that region, all goodies were being directed there because of tomorrow's plan, because it seemed like they did away with us, but God came and brought this thing. So now people have been told to go back to the drawing board because the plan that was there was probably to throw us out.
"But who is God. Does he take ugali at somebody’s house or sleep in Kayole? He came through in his own way. He saw up there people in heaven are disagreeing a lot and came for Baba so that he can go and smoothen things up there," he said.
The remarks sparked condemnation across social media, with leaders and netizens calling out the Nyeri Governor.
