Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale and Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya have announced that the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) will oversee the initial phase of the construction of a new 4,000-bed Multi-Specialty Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret.
In a statement on Monday, November 3, the Ministry of Health announced that the two leaders co-chaired a high-level meeting that focused on coordinating efforts between the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Defence to accelerate the project’s implementation.
"The discussions focused on the construction of the 4,000-bed Multi-Specialty Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Kiplombe, Uasin Gishu County.
"The initial phases, spearheaded by the Ministry of Defence, are already underway, with the first 2,000-bed facility targeted for completion by April 2027," the statement read.
The Ministry noted that the new hospital, which will occupy a 200-acre site, is part of the government’s ongoing investment in affordable and specialised healthcare.

"Set on a 200-acre parcel of land, the fully funded government project will feature 60 ICU beds upon completion, a transformative investment in specialised and affordable healthcare, and a major milestone in Kenya’s journey toward Universal Health Coverage (UHC)," the statement added.
In addition, the meeting reviewed other critical healthcare infrastructure upgrades across the country, including a plan to modernize and expand Balambala Sub-County Hospital in Garissa County.
"The meeting also reviewed the proposed renovation and upgrading of Balambala Sub-County Hospital in Garissa County. Once completed, the facility will provide specialised medical services, including complex surgeries, bringing advanced healthcare closer to rural communities," the statement further read.
The Ministry further noted that other key hospital projects, including Mama Rachel Ruto Hospital, J.M. Kariuki Hospital, and Kenneth Matiba Hospital, are progressing steadily.
"In addition, the meeting noted steady progress on several other hospital projects across the country, including Mama Rachel Ruto Hospital, J.M. Kariuki Hospital, Meru Hospital, Kenneth Matiba Hospital, Githunguri Hospital, Keroka Hospital, Sogoo Hospital, Kakamega Hospital, Nakuru Level VI Hospital, Kapsabet County Referral Hospital, and Siaya County Referral Hospital, among others. Collectively, these initiatives reinforce Kenya’s Taifa Care Model, which seeks to ensure equitable access to quality healthcare for all Kenyans," the statement concluded.
This comes months after the Ministry of Defence announced that KDF would oversee the construction and completion of two stadiums and a hospital project in Nakuru County.
The announcement was made on Wednesday, July 16, following a meeting between Tuya and Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika.
“The Cabinet Secretary and the Governor discussed priority Government infrastructure projects to be implemented by the Ministry of Defence (MOD) through Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) in Nakuru County,” the statement read.
The projects include the long-stalled Afraha Stadium, which is now set for completion under the supervision of KDF, and the construction of the Olenguruone Stadium.
Also high on the agenda is the finalization of the Trauma Centre at Nakuru Teaching and Referral Hospital that has remained incomplete since 2012.
"The Government has prioritized the completion of Afraha Stadium, construction of Olenguruone Stadium and finalization of the Trauma Centre at Nakuru Teaching and Referral Hospital that has been pending since 2012,” the statement added.
