Police have arrested a probox driver after he angrily stabbed a boda boda rider killing him on the spot.

Police in Meru County have arrested a Probox driver after he stabbed and killed a boda-boda rider on the evening of April 6, 2021.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in a statement revealed that the rider, Ian Mwenda, was riding from Maua towards Antubochiu Market when strong winds blew off his cap and it fell on the road.

The 25-year-old then turned back to go and collect his cap, unaware of the incident that would unravel.

George Miriti Kalung'e, who was driving behind the rider in a navy blue Probox Succeed, is reported to have been enraged when Mwenda stopped his motorcycle on the road and bent to pick his cap.

A witness told officers from Maua Police Station that Miriti stopped his vehicle and angrily charged at the rider, demanding to know why he had stopped on the road.

He allegedly mocked Mwenda, “if he wanted to be knocked (dead)."

To avoid a confrontation, Mwenda drove off toward lower Antubochiu Market. However, an irate Miriti followed him at high speed and overtook him a few metres ahead.

"He blocked the rider, came out of his vehicle armed with a knife, and suddenly stabbed him.

"The knife tore through Mwenda’s chest from the front left side. He dropped dead on the road," DCI wrote.

Mwenda was rushed to the Maua Methodist Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police immediately launched a manhunt for Miriti and arrested him Mutuati area.

"Police seized his vehicle, whose windscreen had been smashed, and blood-stained clothes. The exhibits have been preserved for further forensic examination.

"As the suspect awaits arraignment for murder, the search for the murder weapon continues," DCI stated.
