KeNHA has given traders 30 days to remove all businesses, billboards, and structures encroaching on road reserves along national highways.

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has issued a 30-day notice to traders with businesses, billboards and advertisements on road reserves to remove the structures.

In a notice on Tuesday, November 25, KeNHA Director General Luka Kimeli noted that traders have been encroaching on road reserves along national highways.

The authority directed owners of businesses, unapproved or unrenewed billboards, advertisements and directional signs on road reserves to remove them within 30 days.

“All persons with illegal structures, businesses, developments, including unapproved and unrenewed billboards, advertisements and directional signs on road reserves are hereby required to remove them within thirty (30) days from the date of this notice,” Kimeli stated.

The KeNHA Director General warned that failure to comply will result in enforcement actions, including demolition of the structures and recovery of related costs.

“Failure to comply will lead to enforcement action, including demolition and recovery of related costs, without further notice to the owners/agents of the said unapproved structures/unapproved or unrenewed billboards,” Kimeli added.

This comes months after the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) announced plans to remove illegally erected signboards along the Eastern Bypass Corridor.

In a statement on September 15, KURA said that the corridor has been occupied with signboards, compromising both road safety and the urban aesthetics of the area.

The authority added that most advertising boards have been erected illegally on public land.

"It has come to our attention that the Eastern Bypass Corridor has been extensively occupied with signboards, many of which pose safety risks to road users and compromise the urban aesthetics of the area.

"In addition, a significant number of these installations have been erected illegally on public land," the statement read.

As such, KURA said it will undertake a clean-up exercise to restore order along the busy route.

"In light of this, the Kenya Urban Roads Authority will be undertaking a clean-up exercise to restore order along the corridor," KURA stated.
