The family of National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula and Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi is in mourning following the death of their elder brother James Mukhwana Wetang'ula.

Wanyonyi announced the passing away of their elder brother in a statement via X on Wednesday, December 10.

“It is with a heavy heart that I share the news of the passing of my elder brother, Mwalimu James Mukhwana Wetang'ula.

“As a family, it is painful and deeply unsettling, but we remain grateful to God for the gift of his life. As it is written in 1 Thessalonians 5:18, ‘give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus,” Wanyonyi stated.

The Westlands MP mourned his brother as a courageous man whose legacy would continue to guide the family.

“You fought your battles with courage, you ran your race with honour, and you leave behind a legacy that will continue to guide us. May your soul find everlasting peace until we meet again,” he added.

Wetang’ula eulogised his brother as a great individual whose humility, discipline, and wisdom touched many lives.

“James was a devoted father, mentor, and pillar in our community. His legacy as an educator and family man remains firmly in our hearts. We kindly ask for your prayers and support as we mourn his passing and honour his life. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” the National Assembly speaker stated.

Busia County Women Representative Catherine Omayo extended her condolences to Wetang’ula and Wanyonyi following the passing away of their brother and wished them God's comfort. 

“My heartfelt condolences to Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, Hon. Tim Wanyonyi and the entire Wetang’ula family following the passing of James Mukhwana Wetang’ula. May God grant them strength, comfort and peace during this difficult time,” she stated.

This comes almost a year after Wetang’ula’s mother,  Anne Nanyama Wetang’ula, passed away.

Senate Speaker Amason Kingi announced the passing of Wetang’ula’s mother in a statement on Friday, December 20, 2024.

Kingi noted that the deceased, who is also the mother of Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi, left behind a lasting mark in society, even as he sent his condolences to the family.

"The passing on this morning of Khukhu Anne Nanyama Wetang’ula, the mother of Rt Hon Moses Wetang’ula, Speaker of the National Assembly, and Hon Tim Wanyonyi, MP for Westlands, has plunged the Parliament of Kenya and indeed, the entire country into deep mourning.

"In her demise, Khukhu leaves behind an indelible mark in our society as the matriarch of the family that has given this country great leaders, and a mentor to many who lived, interacted and walked with her through life," Kingi remarked.

Wetang’ula’s mother was laid to rest on January 3, 2025, in Kabuchai, Bungoma County.

The burial was attended by President William Ruto, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, among other top government officials.
