DCI detectives have arrested Ken Kimathi Gichunuku, the prime suspect, in the murder of Seth Nyakio, the daughter of Kirinyaga County nominated MCA Lucy Njeri.

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested Ken Kimathi Gichunuku, the prime suspect, in the murder of Seth Nyakio, the daughter of Kirinyaga County nominated MCA Lucy Njeri.

In a statement on Saturday, December 13 evening, the DCI said that the suspect went into hiding in October 2024 after Nyakio’s lifeless body was discovered in Thika Town.

”Detectives from the homicide unit alongside their counterparts from Kisii South and Busia have arrested Ken Kimanthi Gichunuku, alias “Sultan,” who had been on the run over the brutal murder of Seth Nyakio Njeri,” read the DCI statement in part.

The investigative agency noted that detectives, while using forensic leads, trailed the suspect to Busia town near the Kenya-Uganda border.

DCI noted that Gichunuku was working at a cereal distribution shop in Busia town while hiding from the authorities.

“Following the heinous act, the suspect went underground in a bid to evade arrest. However, relentless investigations and forensic leads finally closed in on him.

“Detectives trailed and arrested Gichunuku today in Busia town near the Kenya–Uganda border, where he had been working at a cereal distribution shop while hiding in plain sight,” DCI stated.

The suspect is currently in police custody, undergoing processing pending arraignment in court.

Nyakio was found dead on October 14, 2024, at a rented house in Biafra Estate, Thika town, Kiambu County.

She went missing on October 12, 2024, after she left her home in Kamakis, Kiambu County, to visit a friend in Thika town.

According to her mother, Nyakio’s body had visible injuries on the neck, suggesting that she was strangled.

"I saw visible injuries on the neck. My daughter lay peacefully, and you could even think we were talking to each other because the spirit had not departed from me. And she was the one," Njeri told the media in October 2024.

In November 2024, DCI identified Gichunuku as the prime suspect in the murder and described him as dangerous.

The agency urged the public who knew his whereabouts to report to the nearest police station or call the DCI hotline number.

"Notably, Gichunuku has a criminal record of threatening to kill, as evidenced in a September 25, 2024, court case, and detectives are considering him dangerous to anyone he deems might expose him.

"Do you know his whereabouts? Have you any information that might assist in his speedy arrest? Call our toll-free hotline 0800 722 203 any time to report anonymously, or report to any police station near you," DCI said.
