Masaba North Ward Police Commander: The letter on social media is from an unknown source and it should be known that we follow a chain of command and we cannot pre-empt the process. The events are for the office of the Presidency and it has to be approved through the chains of command.

Police in Nyamira have denied social media reports that they have issued clearance for two events set to be attended by Deputy President William Ruto later this week.

In two letters circulating online, police allegedly gave the go-ahead of the fundraiser for Boda Bodas in Nyamira South but cautioned against any acts of lawlessness.

The letters addressed to West Mugirango MP Vincent Kemosi also stipulated that the legislators will be held accountable for any disorder.

"As the convener, you will work with police officers to ensure that law and order is maintained," the letter stated.

"You will be held responsible for any acts of lawlessness and disorder that may arise," it added.

Police deny issuing clearance

Reacting to the letters, Masaba North Ward Police Commander Elam Esendi said no decision has been made regarding the events, adding that the approval process is still ongoing.

"The letter on social media is from an unknown source and it should be known that we follow a chain of command and we cannot pre-empt the process. The events are for the office of the Presidency and it has to be approved through the chains of command. Communication will be issued once it is passed through the procedures," Esendi said.

On his part, Nyamira County Commissioner Amos Mariba said investigations have started to find out the source of the fake approval letters.

"Such are criminal elements who are breaching the law of public order," Mariba said as quoted by Standard.
