Progress of Ongoing Construction of 20-Kilometre Emali–Matiliku Road [Photos]

Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo has issued an update on the ongoing construction of the Emali–Matiliku road. 

In a statement on Friday, August 7, PS Omollo said the 20-kilometre road is being upgraded to bitumen standards. 

The Interior PS noted that the road is the first phase of the 42-kilometre Ukia–Emali road project launched in November 2025. 

“The upgrade of the 20-kilometre Emali–Matiliku (A5) Road to bitumen standards is progressing well as Phase One of the 42-kilometre Ukia–Emali (B107) Road project, which was launched by President William Ruto in November 2025,” he stated. 

Once completed, the 42-kilometre road project will link Emali, Matiliku and Ukia, with plans to extend connectivity to Wote Town.

According to PS Omollo, the project is expected to improve the movement of people and goods and provide faster access to the Nairobi–Mombasa highway. 

“The road is set to improve the movement of people and goods, provide faster access to the Nairobi–Mombasa Highway (A1), lower transport costs and strengthen trade by connecting Makueni's productive agricultural areas to markets and essential services,” he stated. 

Further, Omollo said the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration through National Government Administration Officers (NGAO) is supporting the project by coordinating stakeholder engagement, protecting public infrastructure and promoting road safety along the corridor.

This comes days after PS Omollo issued an update on the ongoing expansion of the 30.4-kilometre Jomvu–Mariakani road into a dual carriageway. 

In a statement on Tuesday, August 4, Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo said the project expands the road from two lanes to four lanes. 

Omollo noted that the dualling of the road, which is part of the Mombasa-Nairobi highway, is expected to improve the movement of cargo along the northern corridor. 

“The project expands the corridor from two to four lanes, easing congestion and improving the movement of cargo along the Northern Corridor,” said Omollo. 

The Interior PS also said the highway will feature retaining walls in challenging terrain around Mazeras, improved drainage systems, pedestrian footbridges and reserved truck parking facilities.
