Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has dismissed President William Ruto’s remarks that the broad-based camp must win the 2027 General Election.

Speaking on Friday, August 14, in Naivasha, Gachagua described President Ruto’s remarks as wishful thinking. 

“When William Ruto says he must win, that is just wishful thinking. If Ruto had his way, he would continue lying to the people of Kenya. 

“Even his people were saying UDA would win in Ol Kalou by over 80 percent, you know what happened,” Gachagua stated. 

The DCP party leader criticized President Ruto’s use of the phrase “must win”, arguing that it is against democracy.

Gachagua said the Head of State should instead persuade Kenyans that they can trust in him. 

“That issue of a must is against democracy; he is saying it is a must as who, he should persuade the people of Kenya that they can trust him and believe in him,” he added. 

President Ruto on Monday during a joint broad-based parliamentary group meeting in Naivasha said the coalition must secure victory in next year’s election.  

President Ruto argued that the broad-based team must secure victory, not for the benefit of individual leaders, but for the sake of the country.

“We must win the next election. By God's grace, we must win the next election, Insha'Allah. Not for your sake but for the sake of Kenya, because the alternative is difficult to fathom,” Ruto said.

President Ruto warned that losing the election to the united opposition would be dangerous for the country.

“We have no choice because the alternative, I shudder. A group of people who have no plan, no agenda, no policy, no vision is too dangerous for Kenya,” he stated.

Further, President Ruto assured broad-based supporters that UDA and ODM have leaders with the experience needed to structure and sustain a coalition. 

“People should not worry. We are the experts in these things, and we have enough experts to make it work. We will build this thing, and it will become a government,” he added.
