KMPDU SG Davji Atellah explained the mix-up that caused the delay and issued a new timeline for payment of intern salaries.


The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has confirmed that medical interns will receive their salaries by next week.

In a statement issued by KMPDU Secretary General Davji Atellah on Friday, August 29, he confirmed that the Ministry of Health had agreed to disburse all interns' salaries for the July payroll.

He said the payroll would be executed on Saturday, August 29, and that all interns would be paid within three working days.

"Following our recent engagements with MoH, it has been confirmed that salaries for all interns and MoH staff will be disbursed concurrently. 

" The payroll will be executed tomorrow, and salary transfers will begin streaming immediately, with all funds expected to reach your accounts by Wednesday next week at the latest," the statement read in part.

Atellah explained that the delay was because a majority of the medical interns had not remitted information which is essential in processing their pay.

"At the close of the July payroll cycle, fewer than 300 interns had returned their required documentation to the Ministry of Health (MoH), which prevented payments from being processed on schedule," the SG explained.

Meanwhile, he thanked all interns and MoH employees for their patience over the matter, and expressed his solidarity with them.

KMPDU Deputy Secretary General Dennis Miskellah confirmed the update, stating that 'Money is coming, guys'.

The update follows several complaints by politicians and medical interns, who questioned how the government expected them to work without receiving their dues.

Earlier in June, Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale confirmed that the government had hired 6,360 medical interns for 12 months.

He confirmed that the 2026/2027 cohort would begin their internship from July 1, 2026. The cohort includes 75 medical officers, 69 dental officers, 615 Pharmacy officers, 2,000 BSc Nursing Officers, 705 BSc Clinical Officers and 2,096 clinical officers.
