Murkomen hit back at Gachagua over claims that a rogue police unit was set up in Hurlingham.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has dismissed former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua over claims that a rogue police unit was operating in Nairobi's Hurlingham estate.

Speaking during the Administration Police passing-out parade on Friday, September 4, Murkomen said that the claims were propaganda.

He maintained that there is no police unit that operated outside the leadership of Inspector General Douglas Kanja.

"Those who are suggesting that there are some units of police officers that are commanded away from the Police IG are false propagandists," the CS stated.

The Interior Boss maintained that he had no influence whatsoever in the promotion, deployment or assignment of police officers within the National Police Service.

"When I came to this Ministry, I was very aware of my constitutional responsibilities. The IG retains the NPS command, especially on matters of investigation, promotion and deployment of officers without the interference of anyone, including the CS. We will continue defending the independence of the NPS," he stated.

Murkomen called out Gachagua for alleging that IG Kanja was just a 'flower girl' who held the office ceremoniously, while unknown individuals ran the operations.

He insisted that he had full faith in the Police Boss, who was doing his job, and that all NPS  actions are guided by the constitution.

The CS's sentiments came a week after the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) Leader alleged that DIG Eliud Lagat formed a covert police unit in June 2025. Gachagua claimed that the covert unit is stationed in Hurlingham.

Gachagua claimed that the police station is not gazetted and is known as the black site. He sensationally claimed that the unit was deployed to illegally obtain gas cylinders from small-scale gas suppliers across the country.

"Using private vehicles and lorries, they took away with them over 200,000 gas cylinders; no single inventory was done, no O.B. was recorded, and nobody was taken to court," he added.
