Jubilee Deputy Party Leader Jeremiah Kioni has offered himself to succeed retired President Uhuru Kenyatta as the party’s leader.  

Kioni announced on Tuesday, September 15, after Uhuru announced he is willing to hand over the Jubilee Party leadership. 

“I take note of the statement issued by our Party Leader H.E. Uhuru Kenyatta, regarding the ruling by the High Court in Petition No. E532 of 2024 by Justice Lawrence Mugambi.

“In light of His Excellency’s call for an open, transparent, and lawful process of handing over the leadership of the party, I hereby offer myself for the position of Party Leader of the great Jubilee Party, in accordance with the party's constitution, processes and procedures,” said Kioni. 

The former Ndaragwa lawmaker went on to say the next Jubilee Party leader should be elected through the party’s established structures rather than appointed.

Kioni stressed that the Jubilee Party National Delegates Convention (NDC) should determine who will succeed Uhuru.

“Jubilee is a national party and a former ruling party. As such, our leaders are not installed; they are elected by the party delegates at the National Delegates Convention (NDC),” he stated.  

“It is this democratic tradition that has defined Jubilee since its founding, and it is this tradition that must guide us now.” 

Further, Kioni praised Uhuru for his leadership of the Jubilee Party and the country.

The Jubilee Deputy Party Leader expressed confidence that Uhuru will continue offering guidance during the transition.

“His contribution to building Jubilee into the formidable movement it remains today cannot be overstated, and I trust that he will continue to guide us wisely through this transition,” Kioni added. 

Uhuru’s office on Tuesday announced that the retired President is set to pave the way for the handover of the Jubilee Party chairmanship following a High Court ruling upholding Section 6 of the Presidential Retirement Benefits Act.

The office of the former President said the ruling provided legal clarity on the transition of retired presidents from formal political party leadership.

Uhuru welcomed the decision, saying it should not be interpreted as a restriction on his political activities but as a reflection of Kenya’s democratic maturity.

The former President said he was ready to facilitate the completion of the handover in accordance with the law and the party’s governing framework.

"The former President affirms his absolute willingness to see the handover completed openly, lawfully, and in strict accordance with the Party’s constitution. He looks forward to the Party’s processes moving forward without hindrance," the statement read.
