Ali claimed that Masengeli was the best candidate to restore the public trust in the police. 

The Member of Parliament for Nyali Constituency, Mohammed Ali, has weighed in on the conversation about Inspector General Douglas Kanja's succession.

Ali said on Tuesday, September 29, that the Deputy IG, Administration Police Service, Gilbert Masengeli, is the best pick to take over the National Police Service once Kanja retires.

He claimed that Masengeli was the best candidate to restore the public trust in the police.

"At a time when public trust in the police is shaky, Kenyans need an IG with a clean record and proven leadership. If there’s any succession plan, then DIG Gilbert Masengeli should be considered the best fit for the role of IG. This decision is crucial in restoring faith in the Police Service," the MP stated.

The lawmaker, who also doubles as the Wiper Deputy Party Leader, hinted that Masengeli's fellow DIG, Eliud Lagat, was not an option.

He claimed that Kenyans have still not got past the murder of Albert Ojwang', where Lagat. name was mentioned several times. A section of citizens also demanded his resignation at the time.

"Kenyans haven’t forgotten about Albert Ojwang’s murder under police custody. The other options will hurt us," Ali reiterated.

Meanwhile, several leaders mourned Senior Assistant Inspector General of Police Lazarus Opicho, the Cthe Commandant of the Security of Government Buildings (SGB) and VIP Protection Unit, who died earlier.

Opicho passed away while receiving treatment at a hospital in Nairobi after a short illness. Several leaders mourned him, including Chief Justice Martha Koome.

Koome described his death as a loss to the Judiciary and the NPS, and extended her condolences to his family and colleagues.

Saboti MP Caleb Amisi eulogised the late Opicho as one of the good police officers that he knew, and offered condolences to him and his family.

The Kenya Police Service mourned the top cop as an exceptional leader and dedicated officer whose service was marked by vision, commitment and strong values.
