ODM Party leader Oburu Oginga has called on residents of Lamu County and the wider coastal region to support the Ksh2.2 trillion Dangote oil refinery project.

In a statement on Tuesday, September 29, Oburu urged the Lamu residents to embrace the mega project and protect it. 

The Siaya Senator noted that the Dangote oil refinery will stimulate economic activities in Lamu and will be a key to the future of the children of Lamu locals. 

“To the resilient people of Lamu and the wider Coast region, I call upon you to own, protect, and fiercely support this program. This is your project; it is the key to your children's future and the economic liberation of your households. 

“We must collectively tell off the political detractors, professional algorithmic complainers, and agents of poverty who want to derail this impactful project for selfish, short-sighted gains,” said Oburu.

The ODM leader urged Lamu residents to become the primary guardians of the refinery and not to allow anyone to spread propaganda about the project 

“I urge the local community to rise up as the primary guardians of this investment. Do not allow anyone to weaponize propaganda or introduce manufactured friction to scare away a Sh2.2 trillion lifeline that will build your economy. Reject the noise, embrace the work, and let us build Lamu together,” he added. 

Senator Oburu further said the Dangote refinery is a decisive step toward breaking the chains of economic dependency. 

President William Ruto and Nigerian businessman Aliko Dangote are expected to break ground on the construction of the oil refinery in Lamu on Wednesday. 

The refinery which is projected to produce 700,000-barrels-per-day refinery is expected to take around 30 months to be built. 

The refinery will serve Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and other neighboring countries. 

On Tuesday, President Ruto said he will not allow anyone to undermine the construction of the refinery. 

Speaking in Kilifi, Ruto claimed that some individuals are trying to blackmail investor Dangote into ceding shares of the refinery, or else they would frustrate the entire process.

"You are the sponsors of those court cases because you are against this investment since you have not gotten what you have been getting. You are undermining the investment in our country, and I will not allow you.

"When you have a government that, instead of facilitating investors, you are giving conditions and demands, that is how we have driven away investment. That is how we lost the Uganda crude oil pipeline and the Dangote Cement factory," he stated.
