Former Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) Chairperson Macharia Njeru has declared his intention to run for the presidency in the 2027 General Election.
Speaking during an interview on Monday, October 5, Njeru said his experience in both the private and public sectors would set him apart from previous Kenyan presidents.
“I dare say that if I am your next president, I will be the first president who has served extensively both in the private sector and in the public sector.
“If you look at the history of all presidents in Kenya, none did that,” Njeru said.
At the same time, Njeru said that if elected President, he would tackle wastage in government and reduce unnecessary public expenditure.

The former IPOA Chair criticized supplementary budgets, arguing that government could significantly reduce expenditure without affecting government operations.
“I have been in government; the amount of wastage, the amount of money even when they ask for supplementary budgets, is totally unnecessary. In fact, you could cut the cost of those budgets by more than 60 percent and still function; it is possible to do it,” said Njeru.
Njeru served as the founding IPOA chairperson from 2012 to 2016. He previously also served as the Vice Chair of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).
This comes days after Busia Senator Okiyah Omtatah made changes to his presidential exploratory committee ahead of the 2027 General Election.
In a gazette notice dated Friday, October 2, Omtatah appointed John Bwakali as the new chairperson of the committee.
The Busia Senator also appointed Dancan Otieno Onyango as Deputy Chairperson of the presidential exploratory committee.
“It is notified for the information of the general public that Senator Andrew Okiya Omtatah Okoiti has, with immediate effect, appointed David John Bwakali —Chairperson, Dancan Otieno Onyango (Dr.) —Deputy Chairperson, of his Presidential Exploratory Committee,” read part of the notice.
Further, Senator Omtatah extended the committee’s tenure until November 2026.
