“The suspect, Augustine Mjomba Mwadime, was arrested by officers from Jogoo Road Police Station at DC Stage, following reports of a suspicious character extorting unsuspecting members of the public while masquerading as a law enforcement officer,” read the statement in part.
After being confronted by police officers, the suspect introduced himself as Sergeant Augustine Mjomba Mwadime, claiming to be attached to the GSU Training School in Embakasi.
However, his claims raised suspicion, prompting officers to conduct a search that exposed his alleged impersonation scheme.
“But his purported police credentials soon came under scrutiny, and a search exposed an elaborate attempt to lend his fraudulent identity the trappings of legitimate authority,” DCI stated.
The officers recovered a forged certificate of appointment bearing a fake service number, a pair of handcuffs and two keys believed to have been used to make his false identity appear legitimate.
Mwadime was taken into custody, where he is undergoing processing pending arraignment in court.
This comes weeks after DCI detectives arrested Inspector Kenneth Kipkemboi Sang in connection with the murders of Nairobi lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu and Victoria Nthunya Mutiso.
In a statement on Saturday, October 24, DCI said the police inspector who has been on the run was nabbed in Eldoret city in Uasin Gishu County.
According to the DCI, detectives intercepted Sang while he was driving a Toyota Fielder along Uganda Road in Eldoret CBD.
The officer was reportedly in the process of selling the vehicle to raise money for his daily upkeep.
“His arrest brings a key suspect who had remained at large into police custody, marking a significant step forward in the two murder investigations,” DCI said.
Following the arrest, Sang was escorted to Eldoret Police Station for processing.
Sang was arraigned before the Milimani High Court on Wednesday, where he pleaded not guilty to the murder charge.
He was subsequently remanded at Industrial Area Remand Prison pending further directions on his bail application.
