Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia has announced that the government will kick off the compensation of landowners whose properties were heaved off for the construction of the Kenol-Sagana-Marua road.
He revealed that the government had released Ksh15 billion that will be distributed to the landowners through the National Land Commission (NLC).
According to the CS, 500 landowners from Kirinyaga and 900 from Nyeri will be compensated in phase one of the payouts.
“The residents cooperated very well with the contractor thus making the project start without hindrances. We are also grateful to them for being patient this far. I want to assure them that their land compensation will start being processed from Monday next week,” CS Macharia stated.

Phase two, which is the 36 km from Sagana to Marua will cost an estimated Ksh6.1 billion.
CS Macharia noted that the projects which was initially estimated to be completed in three and a half years will be completed a year early.
He noted that the road will open up Nairobi to the Lapset corridor in Isiolo, which links to Lamu, and Moyale towns, for the easy movement of goods between the regions.
Macharia stated that the road projects undertaken by the government are look to open up the country, allowing for rapid development across all sectors of the economy.
“We want to make sure that no part of the country is left behind in terms of infrastructural development. We have launched roads from Central to Nyanza, to Coast and many other parts. The government’s goal is to open up the country so that we can enhance movement of goods and people for economic growth," he said.
