Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson has declared interest in the country's top seat.

Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago has revealed he intends to vie for the presidency.

Addressing county residents on June 7, 2021, the outspoken governor stated that he is laying down plans to clinch the country's top seat in 2032.

"I have a strategic plan. In 2032 I will vie for the presidency, so I have ten years in between to plan," he said.

Speaking at a function attended by religious leaders from the region, the governor stated that he needs more than prayers to become president, reiterating that strategising is key.

Mandago, who is serving his second and final term as governor, assured members of the public that he is dedicated to ensuring a successful end to his tenure with about a year and two months left.

Addressing the succession politics in the county, he adviced those seeking to replace him to appeal to the people, and earn a name for themselves ahead of the anticipated 2022 general elections.

Mandago's declaration, however, contradicts prior announcements by a number of governors who have declared their interest in the presidency and are keen to contest in 2022.

Governors who have declared their presidential bids for next year's general election include; Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua, Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana, Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya, and Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho.

Murang'a Governor Mwangi wa Iria has been touted to be interested in the country's top seat, but id yet to publicly declare interest.

Mandago's decision to contest in 2032 may be attributed to his allegiance to Deputy President William Ruto, who is expected to run for presidency next year.
