Police in Kitale have arrested 42 members of the Amani National Congress (ANC) for claims of contravening the Public order on containment of Covid-19.

The 42 members of the party headed by Musalia Mudavadi were arrested at Milimani Estate during a party grassroots meeting which police claim was in violation of social distancing rules.

The 42 were arraigned at the Kitale law courts before Magistrate Julis Nga’rnga’r and charged with two counts; holding a meeting without a permit and violating Covid-19 guidelines issued by the government.

For the first count, you will each pay a fine of Sh10,000 in default your serve 2 months imprisonment, for second count, you pay Sh5,000 each, in default you serve one month imprisonment,” the magistrate ruled.

Reacting to the arrest and charging of the 42 ANC members, Lugari Member of Parliament Ayub Savula claimed it was a move meant to intimidate Mudavadi and the entire ANC family.

He, however, noted that the party remains firm and will not be shaken with such occurrences.

Hii ni siasa, they want to intimidate us, they want to intimidate our party leader Musalia Mudavadi, they want to intimidate party officials, but sisi hatutishwi, we were following Covid regulations,” Savula said.

Meanwhile, the last Covid-19 regulations including; the 10pm to 4am curfew and ban on all political gatherings elapses tonight.

The government is yet to issue a new directive on the same.
