President Uhuru Kenyatta on Wednesday, 8th September 2021, declared the drought affecting parts of the country a national disaster.

The Head of State instructed The National Treasury and the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government to spearhead Government efforts to assist affected households including water and relief food distribution as well as livestock uptake.

The decision follows the meeting between the Head of State and 85 leaders from Kenya's Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASAL) led by Treasury Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yatani on Wednesday.

Kenya recently warned of a looming drought in 10 counties that have been battling desert locusts in the past year.

Devolution Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa issued a drought alert in Kilifi, Garissa, Isiolo, Mandera, Samburu, Tana River, Wajir, Lamu, Marsabit, and Turkana counties.

According to authorities, 400,000 people at the Coast are in dire need of food, with four out of the region's six counties requiring urgent interventions.

Kilifi, Kwale, Tana River, and Lamu are among 23 counties on the national government's red list as drought ravages Kenya's north, east and coast regions.
