The police boss explained that Bomet and Kericho prisons do not have facilities for juveniles and therefore, the four had to be held in police cells awaiting trial.

A police report filed at the station revealed that the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) established that some of the suspects were missing when he conducted a routine inspection of the cells.

The report indicated that the prisoners managed to flee after creating an opening by cutting metal bars at the back of the cell.

Police officers are yet to identify the materials the prisoners used to cut the metal bars and slip out of the cells.

The incident occurred while two police officers were assigned to man the station.

According to Imamai, the nine prisoners had been accused of various offences and were set to appear in court on October 4.

He revealed that two of the nine were facing theft charges, while three had been arrested in the possession of illicit brew.

The police have since managed to arrested one of the escapees and is now working with the officers to nab the remaining 8.
