"Bogonko's brother Joshua died by suicide. He had lived with Bogonko while he attended college. Joshua moved back home to help take care of their ailing father. Sadly, he was overwhelmed as a caretaker. The family needs support," Smart tweeted.
Bogonko disappeared in September 2013. It wasn't the first time he went 'missing in action' so, friends and family didn't think much of it. He was assumed to be pursuing a story.
However, they were anxious when he didn't turn up for days after the country was engulfed in a shocking terrorist attack, the Westgate Mall terrorist attack. Anxious because this is the kind of story that he would be breaking.
Bogonko was a journalist people loved to hate. He was fearless in his pursuit of stories, even the ones other journalists shied from.
He told stories of politicians to those of who is sleeping with who on his Jackal News blog.
A few days before his disappearance, Bogonko expressed fears for his life, due to a story that he was pursuing.
