One person is reported dead and two others injured during a bandit attack at Kom Durte in Chari ward, Isiolo County on Friday morning, March 25, 2022.

According to reports, the three were travelling towards Merti when bandits suspected to have come from Laisamis in Marsabit County sprayed their vehicle with bullets. 

The vehicle rolled several times before landing in a ditch. The deceased died on the spot while the remaining two suffered injuries.

Confirming the incident, Isiolo County Commissioner Geoffrey Omoding revealed that police officers had been already been deployed to the area.

“A manhunt for the bandits is on and we have sent our officers to beef up security in the area,” Omoding said.

The Nation reported that motorists and passengers plying the Losesia-Kom route have complained about harassment from armed herders suspected to be from neighbouring counties.

The police boss stated that the operation will weed out bandits from the area and restore security.

“We are committed to ejecting the remaining illegal herders through the ongoing operation targeting hotspots like Kom,” Omoding said.

A section of residents has called upon the government to disarm herders in the region. They argued that guns are a major contributor to cattle rustling in the region.

Giro Boru and Juma Golicha Guyo led area youth leaders in demanding enhanced security along the Losesia-Kom route, saying insecurity had claimed more than 10 lives in the last two months.

“The government should address insecurity in the region,” Mr Boru said.

The called out their elected leaders for failing to address the insecurity issue in the region.
