The two were in a group of a six-man gang that has been terrorising Kayole residents.

Police on Wednesday night shot two thugs fatally after they were nabbed attacking a man in Njiru, Nairobi county.

The thugs had attempted to escape when the police fired at them killing the two on spot.

The two were in a group of a six-man gang that has been terrorising Kayole residents. Four others managed to escape.

"They had just knifed a man who was walking home leaving him sprawled on the ground in a pool of blood after taking away the victim’s mobile phone and other valuables," DCI Boss George Kinoti said.

Two police officers on patrol got wind of the attack and acted swiftly in restoring order after the victim raised an alarm.

"Luckily, two officers based at Soweto police station who were on foot patrol responded to the distress calls on time, as the boisterous gang took leave casually, having accomplished their mission," he said.

The group refused to surrender and instead opted to take on the officers in a shootout.

"They came face to face with two officers compelling the thugs to immediately open fire sending the officers to a prone position, as they responded to the provocation in equal measure. "

According to Kinoti, the four others who escaped sustained gunshot wounds.

One gun and a bloodstained knife were recovered from the suspects.

The injured victim was rushed to the hospital as the bodies of the thugs were moved to the city mortuary pending identification.
