Kenyans are expected to dig deep into their pockets after the Energy Petroleum Regulation Authority EPRA, announced new hiked fuel prices on Saturday.

In its monthly review, EPRA announced that it had increased the prices of super petrol, diesel and kerosene by Ksh5.50 respectively.

As a result, a litre of petrol in Nairobi will now retail at Sh150.12, diesel at Sh131.0 and kerosene at Sh118.94 effective midnight.

In a statement released on Saturday, May 14, EPRA said that the prices were hiked due to the average landed cost of the fuel that also went up.

The new prices are in place for the next 30 days and changes either upwards or downwards or remaining the same will be announced on June 14, 2022.

"The applicable pump prices for this cycle for Super Petrol, Diesel and Kerosene have been increased by Ksh5.50 per litre from the immediate previous cycle. The government will utilise the Petroleum Development Levy to cushion consumers from the otherwise high prices," EPRA stated.

This comes amid an acute fuel shortage that has been witnessed all over the country since April this year.

EPRA says the Petroleum Development Levy (PDL) by the government has cushioned Kenyans despite the Sh5.50 rise.

In its statement, EPRA said if PDL was not in place then Kenyans would have paid Sh176.47 for Petrol, Sh174.94 for Diesel and Sh169.26 for Kerosene.

"The Government will utilise the Petroleum Development Levy (PDL) to cushion consumers from the otherwise high prices. In Nairobi, Super petrol will retail at a subsided cost of Kshs. 150.12, Diesel Kshs. 131.00 and Kerosene Kshs. 118.94," added EPRA
