The Nairobi expressway is set for major design changes for easier accessibility to the Nairobi Central Business District, the government said on Tuesday.
Appearing before the National Assembly Transport, Housing and Public Works committee, Transport Principal Secretary Paul Maringa said that re-designing of the road will be done immediately.
“It is something that we are going to do immediately. Already I’m going to approve the new design then construction works will just start,” Maringa told the committee.
The PS added that he would approve the re-designing this week and the construction is expected to take a period of three to six weeks.
In the new design, commuters from Westlands to Nairobi CBD will exit the expressway at Nyayo House, while those from Mombasa Road will access the CBD through Haile Selassie Avenue and Green Park bus terminus.
This will make it easier for Nairobi residents to access the CBD from the expressway, which now has exit points far from the Nairobi CBD.
His remarks come after the road was opened to the public for use on a trial basis. The trial basis was meant to discover areas along the highway that needed further construction or reinforcement.
Motorists pay as high as Sh310 and as low as Sh100 to use the newly-constructed road, depending on the distance travelled.
