President Uhuru Kenyatta on Wednesday, June 1, said that the Kenyan electorate had the opportunity to elect a woman to the second highest office in Kenya.
While delivering his Madaraka Day speech at the Uhuru Gardens, the President said that if it was the wish of the Kenyan electorate, the country would break the glass ceiling to elect a female deputy president.
“In August this year, if it is the wish of the Kenyan electorate, we have a chance of electing a woman and shattering the glass ceiling by assuming the second highest office in the republic of Kenya,” President Kenyatta stated.
The Head of State was speaking as he acknowledged women who held powerful positions in his administration and did exemplary work.
He said that it is the duty of Kenyans to advance the course of women as they were part of the country’s struggle for liberation.
“We owe it them, we owe it to ourselves and we owe it to our country. I’m proud to have been part of this push for women leadership in our republic,” the President stated.
Narc Kenya Party leader Martha Karua, who attended the Madaraka Day celebrations at Uhuru Gardens, is one of the formidable Deputy President hopefuls ahead of the August polls.
